Animal Aid

Animal Aid is the UK's largest animal rights group and one of the longest established in the world, having been founded in 1977.

We campaign peacefully against all forms of animal abuse and promote a cruelty-free lifestyle. We investigate and expose animal cruelty, and our undercover investigations and other evidence are often used by the media, bringing these issues to public attention.

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home

We aim never to turn away a dog or cat in need of help. We reunite lost dogs and cats with their owners; when we can’t do this, we care for them until new homes can be found for them; and we educate the public about responsible pet ownership. Every year the Home takes in around 12,000 dogs and cats.

Defra (the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) is a Government Department in the UK.

The overarching challenge for Defra is to secure a healthy environment in which we and future generations can prosper.

As we build a low carbon, resource efficient economy, Defra helps people to adapt to changes, deals with environmental risks and makes the most of the opportunity we now have to secure a sustainable society and a healthy environment. This will help see us through the difficult economic times, volatile food and energy prices and a changing climate which all make us more aware that we can’t take our environment for granted.

International Animal Rescue

IAR’s mission

The aim of International Animal Rescue (IAR) is to come to the aid of suffering animals with hands-on rescue and the provision of short or long term rehabilitation. Wherever possible we return rescued animals to their natural habitat, but we also provide sanctuary for animals that can no longer survive in the wild.

We work with other likeminded organisations and government departments to develop sound legislation to protect animals from cruelty and neglect. IAR specialises in providing comprehensive sterilisation and vaccination programmes for stray dogs and cats to control populations and prevent the spread of disease. In all that we do, we aim to produce practical solutions that benefit both animals and people.

National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT)

Founded in 1971 the Trust is now one of the top 10 animal rescue and re-homing charities in England, and runs 5 rescue & re-homing centres across the country. Our centres are located in Watford, Berkshire, Essex, Somerset and Cornwall. Our Watford centre is also the home of the Trust's small headquarters operation, where the central support functions covering finance, fundraising, human resources and administration are based.

PDSA for pets in need of vets

In 2008 PDSA celebrates 91 years of caring for the sick and injured animals of people in need. We are proud of our heritage, our achievements and our values. For it is these that have made PDSA what it is today; the UK's leading veterinary charity. But we cannot afford to stand still as the need for our veterinary care is as great as ever. As is PDSA’s determination to expand our PetAid services.

PETA UK: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals

PETA US formed in 1980 in the United States and has more than 2 million members and supporters, making it the largest animal rights organisation in the world.

PETA US and PETA Europe are dedicated to establishing and protecting the rights of all animals. Like humans, animals are capable of suffering and have interests in leading their own lives; therefore, they are not ours to use – for food, clothing, entertainment, experimentation or any other reason. PETA-named affiliates around the world educate policymakers and the public about cruelty to animals and promote an understanding of the right of all animals to be treated with respect.

RCVS Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons

The RCVS is the regulatory body for veterinary surgeons in the UK. Its role is:

  • To safeguard the health and welfare of animals committed to veterinary care through the regulation of the educational, ethical and clinical standards of the veterinary profession, thereby protecting the interests of those dependent on animals and assuring public health.
  • To act as an impartial source of informed opinion on animal health and welfare issues and their interaction with human health.
